Launch of the India-UK Water Centre
Jagdish Krishnaswamy from ATREE led a break-out session and presented a poster at the recent launch of the India-UK Water Centre at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology.

The India-UK Water Centre (IUKWC) was recently set up as a virtual joint centre funded by the Indian Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) and the UK’s Natural Environment Research Centre (NERC) to promote collaboration and dialogue between Indian and UK water researchers, water policy-makers and water businesses around the following areas:
-
hydro-climate services
-
water-energy-food nexus
-
freshwater management (including monitoring frameworks)
-
catchment management
As part of the launch of this newly established centre, a workshop was held at the end of November 2016 at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), which hosts the centre on behalf of the MoES. The aim of the workshop was to explore opportunities for collaboration across a network of Indian and UK scientists working broadly in the areas of climate change, hydro-climatology and hydro-climate services. Knowledge and information was exchanged on the role of climate services and projections in future water management, planning and adaptation; and current understanding, gaps and needs around hydro-climatological systems and information services.
As part of the workshop, Jagdish Krishnaswamy, from the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE), led a break-out group on research, capacity building and exchange priorities between the UK and India, looking at both the social and natural sciences. In addition, he presented a poster about the work ATREE has done to increase civil society’s capacity to generate and disseminate hydro-climatic data and services, including in the framework of the ASSAR project.
